Aidan O’Brien Fillies Leads Anglo-Irish Charge at the Breeders’ Cup

With the domestic season almost at an end, one of the biggest remaining Flat highlights comes in the USA. Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October see the Breeders’ Cup Festival deliver a Halloween treat for racing fans. In addition to the stellar prize money and reliable US razzmatazz, much of the appeal of this meeting, at least for UK fans, lies with the familiar names on show.

Given the riches on offer, the Breeders’ Cup Festival never fails to spark the interest of the leading British and Irish trainers, with Charlie Appleby, Aidan O’Brien, and co. taking dead aim at the Grade 1-laden feast. With the final fields taking shape, the following five runners, in particular, appear well placed to launch a successful transatlantic raid.

Sun Goddess – John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

A recent addition to the Breeders’ Cup menu, this 1m contest has favoured the hosts since its 2008 debut. That’s a little surprising given the strong record of European runners in the turf contests, but recent results suggest the tide may be turning.

Three of the past four editions have fallen to a trainer with the surname O’Brien, with Aidan striking twice and Donnacha claiming the most recent renewal. This year, Aidan looks to hold the ace in the pack, with Sun Goddess one of the shortest-priced favourites at the entire meeting. Already a three-time Group 1 winner, having landed the Phoenix Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes, and Cheveley Park Stakes, she is odds-on across the board as she steps up to a mile for the first time.

Diamond Necklace – Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf

The US rarely gets a look-in in a contest dominated by British and Irish runners – even Willie Mullins got in on the act in 2025. That trend looks set to continue in 2026, with a host of talented performers set to cross the Atlantic. The defending champion holds an entry, as do Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini, Arc runner-up Bay City Roller, and Irish Champion Stakes winner Hotazhell. However, an Aidan O’Brien filly who has yet to win over the 1m4f trip dominates the market.

Unbeaten in her first six starts, Diamond Necklace swept to Group 1 glory in the Prix Marcel Boussac, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, Prix de Diane, and Nassau Stakes. She lost little in defeat when third in the Arc last time and should enjoy the speed-favouring Keeneland track.

Notable Speech – FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile

Having struggled to land a blow in the early part of the 21st century, Britain and Ireland have roared back with six wins in eight editions of the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Charlie Appleby is responsible for four of those wins and saddles the warm favourite as Notable Speech returns to defend his crown.

Bursting onto the scene with a 16/1 success in the 2024 2,000 Guineas, this son of Dubawi has struck seven times at the highest level. Now five years old, he has looked as well as ever in 2026, with his sparkling turn of foot taking him to wins in the Lockinge Stakes, City of York Stakes, and the Woodbine Mile. He enjoyed no luck when fourth on his only previous trip to Keeneland but is the one to beat if he can secure a clear passage here.

Libertango – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

Joining the Breeders’ Cup party in 2018, the home team claimed the first four editions of this event for the youngsters. Thanks to Ger Lyons and brothers Charlie and Mark Appleby, Britain and Ireland have won three of the four renewals since.

The unbeaten Brickyard Belle is the big home hope in 2026 but must repel a whole host of raiders, including current market leader Libertango. Representing one of Britain’s most upwardly mobile trainers, George Boughey, this daughter of No Nay Never boasts career form figures of 1-1-2-1-2, including wins at Group 3 and Group 2 level. Finding only Sun Goddess too good in the Cheveley Park Stakes, she has sound claims of bagging a first win at the highest level.

Great Barrier Reef – Brown Advisory Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf

With eight wins, including each of the past four renewals, Aidan O’Brien is easily the most successful trainer in the history of this 1m event. The Ballydoyle maestro has four entries in 2026, with the market suggesting Great Barrier Reef is the horse most likely to make it five in a row.

Sharing a sire with Libertango, this good-looking chestnut won his first three starts, including the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes and Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. That streak ended when beaten at odds-on in the Round Tower Stakes, and he finished only third in the Dewhurst Stakes on his most recent assignment. However, he endured a troubled passage that day and may have lost out to two genuine top-notchers in Darkness Falls and Desert Castle.

With live chances spread throughout the fixture, the British and Irish trainers look set to play a prominent role at this autumn highlight from Kentucky. As ever, this should be well worth staying up late for.
